MORE: Find your perfect pair | Reflective apparel for dark runs

With winter quickly approaching, the opportunity to hit the pavement during the short window of daylight can sometimes seem near impossible. With an energetic toddler, household to keep afloat and job that is no longer constrained by the hours of 9-5 (come on, you know what I mean!), running in the a.m. can be the difference between a good and bad day. Here are eight reasons why I run before the sun comes up and you should, too!

It gets me outside. These days Zoom fatigue is real. And if you’re like me, the lack of  a commute or routine in the a.m. can literally result in the following: bed, coffee, computer. So, it’s a reason to get outside. And while it may be cold, the fresh air can set the tone for a better day. Trust me, you’ll feel less guilty when you realize it’s 5 p.m. and you haven’t gotten outside since starting the workday.

It’s not as intimidating as it seems. It’s easy to come up with every excuse in the book to avoid the early morning run. Too tired, not enough time, too cold, the wrong gear. With the right amount of sleep, establishing routine, and cold weather essentials — a pair of running tights, wool socks, and the right shirt & jacket — waking up early will become second nature and you won’t remember days before the early-morning run.

Peace & quiet
. Less people and cars on the road can make for a more enjoyable run, making socially distancing yourself that much easier and less reasons to stop at stoplights.

You’re forced to watch the sun come up. And, well, there’s nothing more beautiful than that.

You’ll be a better human. Your friends, family and co-workers will thank you. Running before my day truly begins gives me a clear perspective to start the day.

Coffee. If you’re anything like me, you can’t function, and that includes going out for a run, without coffee. I always set my alarm to allow time for coffee before a run. Forced alone time, before the chaos of the day, makes that first cup that much more enjoyable and helps me wake up even if the cold of winter can do that for me. Just make sure to make the coffee the night before. 😉

Two words: Ice cream
. This has nothing to do with running before the sun comes up but, let me tell you, it makes my favorite guilty pleasure that much more enjoyable.

Lastly, make sure you have shoes and apparel you’re excited about. These days I rotate between the Endorphin Shift – this shoe changed my life! – and the Guide 13. Every now and then I throw in a speed day, well, in the Endorphin Speeds, of course!

I recognize this routine isn’t for everyone. So, no matter when you get out there, or how fast or far you run, just remember how you feel when you finish. I never regret it.

If you’re up for the pre-sunrise challenge, treat yourself to a fresh pair of shoes, maybe a pair that shine bright in the early morning dusk, and/or some apparel that will keep you warm and comfortable all winter long.
