For Good, Run

You know the feeling. When the 5 a.m. alarm goes off. It’s dark and cold. All you want to do is hit the snooze button. Yet, despite how much we all dread it, we have to get it done so we do. Period. But, how the seasons change so quickly …

And with that time of year quickly approaching, here is our top advice for staying safe while running in the dark:

  • The buddy system: Running with a friend and trusted training partner has multiple benefits. Accountability and motivation being a few, but having an extra set of eyes – and ears – is always key. And, yes, dogs count as running companions, too.
  • Leave the earbuds at home: Yes, music, audiobooks and podcasts help our runs fly by, but being focused and attentive to any and all sounds is key when it comes to night-time running.
  • Wear lights: Even if you are decked out in the brightest of colors, it is difficult for drivers to see you in the dark. Investing in reflective apparel and accessories is a must.
  • “To the left, to the left”: Yes, these are lyrics to a popular Beyoncé song but it is also the side of the road you should be running on. While sidewalks are always the No. 1 option, if the road is your only choice always – day or night – position yourself on the left side so you can see oncoming traffic.
  • Trust your gut: This goes for all things, but if something doesn’t feel right then trust those instincts. Resort to plan B and pick a more populated route, head to the treadmill, or head home.

Stay safe out there! We’ll see you out there with a friend, not listening to music, in your reflective gear and running on the left side of the road. 😉
